FACTOR Single/EP JSR vs Album JSR: Which Program Fits Your Project?

You've written songs, booked studio time, and you're ready to record. The choice between FACTOR's two Juried Sound Recording programs isn't just about how many tracks you're cutting. It's about matching your release scope, budget ceiling, and career trajectory to the right program.

If you only read one thing

Single/EP JSR ($25,000, 1-6 tracks under 30 min): one flexible envelope, no component caps. You allocate across recording, marketing, video, radio, and tour as you choose. Best for shorter integrated release campaigns.

Album JSR (up to $67,500, 7+ tracks and 30+ min): six components with their own caps, Sound Recording mandatory plus a minimum of two others. Best for full-album releases with everything from studio to tour funded under one program.

One juried program per fiscal year (Apr 1 to Mar 31). Lifetime max of three JSR projects in any combination.

The two programs at a glance

Single / EP JSR
For shorter releases
$25,000max funding, flexible envelope
  • 1-6 songs, under 30 minutes total
  • 50% reimbursement of eligible costs
  • One application, one envelope: no individual component caps
  • You allocate across recording, marketing, video, radio, tour
Album JSR
For full-lengths
$67,500max funding across 6 components
  • 7+ songs and 30+ minutes (or track-equivalent album over 12 months)
  • Variable rates per component (50% to 100%)
  • Six components, each with its own cap
  • Sound Recording mandatory plus minimum two others

The six components of Album JSR

Album JSR is one program with six funded activities. Sound Recording is mandatory, and you must include at least two of the other five. You decide which components fit your project. The total cap across all of them is $67,500.

Mandatory
Sound Recording
$10,000
50% reimbursement
Marketing
$25,000
50% reimbursement
Video
$20,000
50% reimbursement
Tour Support
$30,000
75% subsidy
Showcase
$7,500
75% subsidy
Radio Marketing
$5,000
100% reimbursement

The component caps add up to more than $67,500, which means you cannot max every one. The applicant chooses the mix that supports the project. A studio-heavy artist might claim recording, video, and marketing. A tour-focused artist might pair recording with tour support and showcase. The $67,500 ceiling forces a strategic choice.

Which one is for you?

Answer these three questions

1. Is your project 1-6 tracks (under 30 min) or 7+ tracks (30+ min)? Shorter: Single/EP. Longer: Album. Format determines eligibility before anything else. A track-equivalent album (multiple singles or EPs released over 12 months totalling 7+ tracks and 30+ min) also qualifies for Album JSR.
2. How much total funding do you realistically need across the project? ~$15K-$25K total: Single/EP's $25K cap with full flexibility. $30K-$67K across recording + marketing + video + tour: Album JSR's broader ceiling.
3. Do you want a single flexible envelope, or component-level structure? One pool you allocate freely: Single/EP. Six structured components, each with their own cap and reimbursement rate: Album.

Album JSR project structure and timing

Album JSR runs on a layered timeline. Sound Recording is the first active component. Additional components are added after Sound Recording is submitted, with their own deadline windows.

One open Artist program project at a time. You cannot run Album JSR alongside an active Single/EP JSR, Artist Development, or Artist Entrepreneur project.

The lifetime cap

Artists receive JSR funding a maximum of three times across their career, in any combination of Single/EP and Album:

JSR project #1any format
JSR project #2any format
JSR project #3any format

After three JSR projects, you move toward Artist Entrepreneur (the top-tier program with higher caps and broader autonomy) if you meet the Artist 3 criteria.

Heads up

Artists who already receive Top-Tier Envelope Funding are ineligible for JSR. Primarily Francophone artists are expected to apply to Musicaction rather than FACTOR JSR. Confirm your stream before investing time in an application.

Strategic fit

Choose Single/EP JSR if...

  • You're releasing 1-6 tracks and need total budget flexibility within $25K
  • You're between Artist Development ($5K) and a full album cycle
  • You're building focused marketing spend around a short release
  • You'd rather allocate freely than fit into six pre-defined component caps
  • Project budget totals around $20K to $50K and you're claiming half of it

Choose Album JSR if...

  • You're recording a full-length (7+ tracks, 30+ minutes)
  • Your project includes a real tour ($30K cap at 75% subsidy is significant)
  • You're planning multiple music videos ($20K Video cap)
  • Project budget supports up to $67,500 in FACTOR funding
  • You're comfortable navigating six structured components rather than one pool

Assessment

Both programs use the same jury process. Industry professionals score applications on the strength of the assessment tracks (demos), the marketing plan, and the project overall.

For Album JSR specifically, FACTOR weights the score: 80% on the assessment tracks (songs, vocals, musicality) and 20% on market activity and release plan. That weighting tells you where to put your effort. The two demo tracks have to be your strongest.

Top-scoring applications are reviewed by FACTOR staff for eligibility, then forwarded for approval. Jury takes about eight weeks from the deadline.

Deadlines and intake windows

Single/EP, closed
May 14, 2026
Next intake typically opens each spring. Check FACTOR's deadlines page for current dates.
Album, opens soon
Sept 10, 2026
Applications open July 23, 2026. Confirm guidelines on FACTOR's site before applying.

Because you can only apply to one juried program per fiscal year, the timing of your project matters. If you're planning both a single release in spring and an album in fall, you'll need to choose which gets JSR funding and find alternative support for the other.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply to both Single/EP JSR and Album JSR in the same year?

No. FACTOR limits artists to one juried program application per fiscal year (April 1 to March 31). You must choose between Artist Development, Single/EP JSR, or Album JSR. If you have multiple projects, prioritize the one that needs funding most urgently or has the strongest competitive position.

What if I want to turn my EP into an album later?

You can include tracks funded through Single/EP JSR on a future album, but those tracks won't be eligible for additional recording funding in an Album JSR application. You could still apply for Album JSR to fund new tracks and promotional components, but you'd need to note which songs were previously funded.

How many times can I receive JSR funding?

Artists can receive JSR funding a maximum of three times across their career, in any combination of Single/EP and Album. Once you hit three JSR-funded projects, you're no longer eligible for either, though you may qualify for Artist Entrepreneur if you meet the Artist 3 criteria.

Do I have to claim every Album JSR component?

No. Sound Recording is mandatory, plus a minimum of two other components. You choose the mix that supports your project. The six available components are Sound Recording, Marketing, Video, Tour Support, Showcase, and Radio Marketing. The $67,500 program ceiling forces you to choose, since the individual caps add up to more than the program total.

What counts as a "track-equivalent album"?

A series of singles or EPs released within a 12-month period that together meet the 7+ tracks and 30+ minutes threshold. If your release strategy is rolling singles rather than one drop, this option lets you apply for Album JSR rather than running multiple Single/EP applications.

Can a label apply for multiple artists in the same deadline?

Yes, up to two JSR applications per deadline, for different artists. Labels in the Top-Tier Envelope are not eligible. Labels in the Mid-Tier Envelope can apply. A label can have at most two unreleased FACTOR-supported sound recordings in the JSR program at one time.

I'm primarily a Francophone artist. Can I apply to FACTOR JSR?

Francophone artists recording primarily in French and developing their careers in a French-language market are expected to apply to Musicaction instead. You may still be eligible for FACTOR on English-language materials for the English market. If your project has been submitted to Musicaction and rejected, it's not eligible for FACTOR funding.

What if my project is six songs but runs 32 minutes?

Single/EP JSR requires 1-6 songs AND under 30 minutes total. Album JSR requires 7+ songs AND 30+ minutes. A six-song project at 32 minutes doesn't cleanly fit either. Reach out to your FACTOR Project Coordinator before applying to confirm which stream is right.

Can I use Single/EP JSR funding for a live album or covers album?

FACTOR's JSR programs fund original sound recordings. Live albums and covers albums typically aren't eligible unless they meet specific originality criteria. Contact your FACTOR Project Coordinator before applying if your project includes non-original material.

What's the difference between JSR and Artist Entrepreneur?

Artist Entrepreneur is FACTOR's top-tier program for Artist 3s and artists who have maxed out their three JSR projects. It provides flexible funding across recording, marketing, and touring with higher caps and more autonomy. If you're eligible for Artist Entrepreneur, you're no longer applying to JSR programs.
